Personal History

How ironic Mrs. McComas- I too wanted to become a medical technologist! I even went so far as to go to a vocational-technical school my junior and senior years of high school for that. I had to find something to do for the second half of the day (since I needed nothing else to graduate) at school. I didn't know that I really wanted to do that for sure, but that is what I decided once I had spent some time with the class. I had planned on getting an associates degree and then going on to college to finish up. Anyway to make it a short story I soon found out I didn't like it. Once I was actually put to work (Logan general hospital) for clinicals. I thought it was boring. I switched my major quickly to (get this....) criminal justice. I wanted to be a PI!!! (LOL) Oh gosh stop me I am still laughing!
Anyway, after many twists and turns of life, I ended up in a small rural town in Boone county. I enrolled my daughter in pre-school at the elementary school. Soon I was room mom and loving every minute of it. One child in particular kept my attention. Sadly, not many others paid him any attention. The reason none of the kids would play with him or interact in any way was because they couldn't understand a thing he said. He was barely intelligible. Every word came out like a grunt (or something like that). I talked to the teacher about him and she said that the school did have an SLP that visited on Thursdays. Unfortunately he was't enrolled. His mother failed time and time again to sign the consent form. He was disruptive continually in the class, and refused many activities. I know that his speech impairment was the cause, because he was very smart . He was a poor helpless child that I needed and wanted so badly to help. That is how I knew I wanted to become a Speech Pathologist.

Week 2 Online Journal

Having Monday off was a great way to start my week. I didn’t really do anything for the Labor Day holiday. I think I spent the day doing laundry! I did a little planning for the week. I made post its for the upcoming assignments due and placed them on top of my binders (where they shouldn’t be missed). I went through my planner for the week and made sure I have an idea of what is coming. That is really all the planning I did. I tell myself all the time that I am not going to let anything pile up on me, but sometimes it happens anyway. The week wasn’t too bad.
I try to stay ahead in my classes as much as time permits. I have done pretty well so far. My plan for the week was to write up my observation reports the same evening of that class. I am afraid I might forget, and not understand my notes. I have done pretty well with that. I filled out the case history form to have Haleigh come to the 424 Lab (LONG, LONG, LONG). I read some in the texts, and did the worksheets for one of our classes (still don’t remember the names of them all!) Of course I spent some time on my computer learning all about the web and email and all kinds of new things. So far so good!!
I am still feeling pretty good about the semester. Not too stressed, not too sleepy. Well…. I should admit that I took a little nap earlier (shhh, don’t tell anyone). Haleigh is out visiting and the house is sooo quiet. I feel good yet a little nervous about what is yet to come. I look forward to our times in the clinic observing and evaluating on our own. I like to get down and play with kids. I think it will be fun. I am a little anxious about doing the assessment. There’s a lot to know about the test you use. I just hope I get enough information about it.
I have a few assignments to do this weekend so I suppose I should cut this off and get to it. See everyone Monday.
