Journal entry #1

December 10, 2000
Today Michael’s teacher called again. I don’t know what the problem is this time. I have tried to explain to her, that Michael is just as frustrated as she is. He tries to communicate with everyone, but he just can’t get the words out quick enough. I feel so sorry for him. He has never really been frustrated with his communication difficulties. Since he is starting to disrupt class now, I am not sure what my next step should be. I suppose I will have to call a team meeting. Maybe the counselor will have some input. I know it is hard for him. He is starting to be more intelligible, but the road is long. I have spoken to so many parents of Apraxic kids. They have success stories. But it took them such a long time to get where they are today. I don’t doubt Michael will be successful. He is such a strong little boy. I just don’t want him to suffer through it for so many years. I want to make it easier on him. Hopefully the counselor will have answers. I just feel frustrated that people don’t understand he is acting up for a reason, not just to be a bad kid. I feel so helpless.

Today I talked to Mrs. Adkins. She seemed sympathetic to Michael's situation this time. I told her that I am going to set up a team meeting. She agreed that that was the appropriate thing to do. As soon as I talk with everyone I am sure I will feel better.
Michael's speech therapy went well today. Joanna commented on Michael's attitude. She said he was acting like he actually wanted to be there. I think that Michael has finally accepted the fact that he is there for a reason. It's not fair that he has to be there everyday, but he is such a good sport. He really wants to communicate like the other kids. Although it took him so long to figure that out. I am just so proud of him.
I have read alot about Michael's diagnosis lately. I have even subscribed to a mailing list made just for parents like me. I hope to keep in contact with the group regularly. They seem to be so supportive of each other. I really need that right now. I don't have all the answers and I feel like I am drowning in the unknown.

Week 8 Online Journal

Well this week has been eventful, maybe not academically, but a very unnerving week for me and my family. My focus really hasnt been on school this week (I am sorry to say). My family needed me and I just tried to get through with what I was capable of doing.
I read alot of everyone elses work this week when I had the chance. I think everyone is doing great. I am still working on my powerpoint. I have a few more slides to add. Not sure how I am going to add them in yet. I am working out the outline still. I thought I had it then I ran across some more information and needed to add it in. I should just post it as a draft and move, on but perfectionism is taking over.
I really appreciated everyones peer reviewing last week. The changes they suggested helped and made for a better genre for me. Thanks guys! I havent made the changes to my brochure yet, but will probably to that today. I am working on about 3 research projects right now so today is gonna have to be set to one, and well apraxia is the winner for today. I have thought long and hard about what I want to do with my project. I want to put everything in terms, so that anyone can read it and understand it. I tried to do that with my brochure and am kinda doing that with my powerpoint presentation too.
Although this week has been tough for me and my family, and we are glad it is over, we still stand stronger in living through such trials life hands us.
